Students pursuing the general concentration have flexibility in their focus, allowing them to explore multiple Asian countries or regions rather than specializing in just one. They can select electives based on various objectives, such as gaining a comprehensive understanding of Asia or examining specific themes (like politics, social transformation, or economic growth) across different Asian cultures. The program requires two years of an Asian language study, with any Asian language qualifying. Native speakers of an Asian language can meet this requirement by showing proficiency equivalent to second-year college-level coursework. This open major can be declared at any time.
