Penn's English program allows students to explore language, literature, literary history, and theories of literary creation through a customizable thirteen-course major. As they fulfill the language and literature requirements along with five core literary history courses, students can focus on their personal interests through six-course specialized concentrations. The department provides over twenty concentration options, including multiple paths for aspiring creative writers. English majors at Penn examine language, literature, and culture through diverse global perspectives and media forms - from traditional texts and manuscripts to theater, cinema, television, and digital platforms, developing their analytical and communication abilities wherever English is used.
