The Geography Department provides graduate studies culminating in MA, MS, and PhD degrees. Our programs focus on three key areas: Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Geographic Information Science. With a compact faculty, students typically pursue customized programs incorporating courses from related fields. While foundational geography knowledge is required, we encourage applicants from diverse academic backgrounds who can apply their expertise to geographical challenges.
Graduate students should regularly review the Geography Graduate Student Handbook. This resource outlines curriculum expectations, progress reviews, comprehensive exam procedures, academic standing criteria, available support services, and additional essential information. Make sure to understand its contents thoroughly and refer to it for any program-related inquiries.
The master's degree typically requires two years of full-time enrollment. Full-time status requires a minimum of nine credits per term, with most students taking twelve credits (three four-credit courses) each semester.
