The Fibers program at the University of Oregon actively contributes to modern fiber art conversations through hands-on studio work, academic research, and thoughtful dialogue. The curriculum explores concepts significant to fiber arts and contemporary art at large, covering topics like material exploration, ancient techniques, eco-conscious practices, social connections, work dynamics, identity politics, feminist perspectives, LGBTQ+ studies, race relations, postcolonial thought, recurring motifs, and decorative designs.
Learners investigate performance art, immersive installations, and location-based works within an intellectually stimulating setting while mastering skills in screen-printing, embroidery, textile construction, color application, and various fiber processes. The program fosters material experimentation as participants cultivate personal artistic voices within a supportive creative network. Cross-disciplinary approaches are embraced, with many students incorporating insights from fields beyond visual arts, including sexuality studies, cultural traditions, literary arts, and movement practices.
