The discipline of Classics encompasses Greek and Roman civilizations from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Undergraduate students primarily focus on mastering Greek or Latin (or both) to read ancient texts in their original languages. Additionally, learners can explore the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean region. Classical archaeology studies provide students with comprehensive knowledge of Greek and Roman historical sites and artifacts. While emphasizing Greek and Roman architecture, implements, and artifacts, these courses also highlight the intercultural exchanges that shaped these materials.
The department provides a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics. Students can specialize in Latin language and literature, Greek language and literature, or a blend of both. Alternatively, they may examine ancient civilizations' literature and culture through courses utilizing secondary sources and translations, or concentrate on Classical Archaeology and material artifacts.
