The Department of Classics immerses students in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations through the study of their languages, Greek and Latin. As an inherently interdisciplinary field, classics majors examine various facets of Greco-Roman society by analyzing art, architecture, artifacts, literature, and linguistics. The curriculum spans from prehistoric times through the early medieval period. Additionally, classics scholars investigate how ancient Greece and Rome shaped subsequent artistic and literary traditions, along with modern social and political systems. Students also discover how classical antiquity differed profoundly from contemporary society. Majors may focus on language studies (Greek, Latin, or both) or pursue classical civilization through archaeology, material culture analysis, and translated works.
