The Department of Biology's graduate program launched shortly after the University of Oklahoma's establishment, with OU's first doctoral degree being granted in Biology. Today, the program boasts global recognition for its excellence in ecology/systematics, animal behavior, neuroscience, physiology, and genetics/cell biology. With approximately 50 enrolled graduate students, our PhD program aims to equip students for thriving careers in academia, biomedical fields, environmental sectors, or government agencies. We particularly value our outstanding graduate instruction and proven track record in cultivating accomplished researchers. Our inclusive, cooperative environment fosters innovative, cross-disciplinary work. Students benefit from top-tier facilities supporting field research, molecular biology, microscopy, bioinformatics, quantitative biology, and physiology - resources further amplified through collaborations with the OU Biological Station, Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, and Oklahoma Biological Survey.
