The Biology Ph.D. program provides in-depth, advanced training in the Biological Sciences. Students gain comprehensive exposure to key research domains through diverse coursework and specialized seminars. Cross-disciplinary studies in related scientific fields are strongly recommended. The curriculum emphasizes both research proficiency and teaching skills, fostering collaborative work across disciplines like Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics. The department collaborates with several interdisciplinary initiatives including the Biotechnology Center, Computational Genetics and Genomics Center, Computational Molecular Science Institute, and Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine Institute. Faculty expertise spans multiple specialties: aquatic/terrestrial ecology, biochemistry, biophysics, cellular biology, computational genomics, developmental biology, evolutionary/organismal biology, genetics, molecular biology, molecular evolution, neurobiology, and virology.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline: A baccalaureate degree in Biology or another science field is required.

GRE: Required, with a combined minimum score of 305 on the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections.
Applicants who earned their baccalaureate degree from an institution where the language of instruction was other than English, with the exception of those who subsequently earned a master's degree at a U.S. institution, must report scores for a standardized test of English that meet these minimums:
