The OU School of Visual Arts encompasses four primary disciplines: Studio Art, Art History, Art, Technology and Culture, and Visual Communication. Studio Art offers programs focused on painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. Art History explores the historical context of artworks, artifacts, and architectural structures. The Art, Technology and Culture division covers photography, videography, filmmaking, digital art techniques, and emerging media forms. Visual Communication prepares students for careers as graphic designers, illustrators, production managers, and other visual arts professionals in advertising and design industries. As Oklahoma's most extensive art institution, the OU School of Visual Arts stands alone in providing both master's and doctoral degrees in art history. The school supports around 400 undergraduate and graduate students across its programs, guided by 26 full-time faculty members including practicing artists, designers, academics, a dedicated Sculptor-in-Residence, and several endowed chairs such as the H. Russell Pitman Professorship in Art History and the Charles Marion Russell Memorial Chair for Western American Art. Committed to fostering artistic innovation and academic research, the school nurtures creative development at all educational levels.
