Deepen your appreciation of art and its societal role through dedicated study. You'll gain comprehensive insights into historical and modern visual arts, master art history research techniques, and refine your analytical abilities. Students learn to critically evaluate and implement various theoretical approaches when examining artworks, visual culture imagery, or related materials. Faculty offer guidance and support for graduate research in these key areas: Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern visual and material culture, along with South Asian art and architecture. The study of visual and material culture across the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas from the 1500s to present day. The historical development, research methods, and theoretical frameworks of art and visual culture since the 20th century.
Students collaborate with professors whose specialties converge on topics like colonialism, postcolonial studies, geography, ritual practices, spatial theory, race, gender, and sexuality studies. The program connects learners with renowned scholars through guest lectures and interactive workshops, delivered through multiple formats. UNT's location provides easy access to prominent cultural institutions including the African American Museum of Dallas, Amon Carter Museum, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Meadows Museum, and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
