Pursue a doctoral degree in the art of swinging music at the UNT College of Music. The Jazz Studies program at UNT stands among the country's most prestigious and pioneered its specialized degree path. The Doctor of Musical Arts program provides concentrations in performance (encompassing conducting and jazz studies) with complementary studies in areas like collaborative piano, composition, conducting, contemporary music, early music, jazz studies, music education, music and medicine, musicology, music theory, opera, performance, sacred music, or vocal pedagogy. This rigorous program demands at least three years of study, totaling 84 credit hours beyond undergraduate coursework. Following the initial 30-hour master's equivalency in your primary field, the doctoral curriculum requires an additional 54 credit hours minimum.

Qualification Requirements

Official transcripts are required from every college or university you have attended and must arrive by the application deadline. The transcripts must show you have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent).
Applicants for admission to the M.M. or D.M.A. degree programs in performance or Graduate Artist Certificate in Music Performance (GAC) must pass an admission audition before a faculty panel. Apply for admission to the College of Music through the online application for admission, audition, scholarship, fellowship and assistantships

Repertoire List
Personal statement which must describe your professional background, and purpose for pursuing the degree, and outline your professional goals.
Perform an on-campus audition, and, while on campus for the audition, have an interview with members of the jazz faculty.
Effective for the Fall 2024 admission cycle, we no longer require submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or UNT Graduate Writing Exam.
