The DMA in Choral Music is usually a three-year program, with the initial two years requiring students to reside in Champaign-Urbana. The curriculum centers on a four-semester series focusing on conducting techniques, choral repertoire, and participation in University choir performances. Participants engage in rigorous orchestral conducting training and receive individual vocal instruction. The program also mandates coursework in music history and/or theory (including the Advanced Music Literature classes listed below), a secondary concentration area, plus student-selected electives. Often, candidates extend their stay for a third year to prepare recitals, complete doctoral examinations, and develop their culminating research project (either a dissertation or thesis).
