The Geography PhD program empowers students to expand their expertise in both the scope and sophistication of geographic theories and research techniques. Doctoral candidates select a specialization from three distinct tracks: Urban Planning and Regional Development, Environmental Systems and Resource Conservation, or Geospatial Data Science.

The program concludes with either a conventional dissertation or a series of three research articles suitable for academic publication.

This specialization encompasses studies in metropolitan growth and economic strategies across various regional contexts, addressing topics like infrastructure planning, hospitality economics, population dynamics, jurisdictional demarcations, and commercial location analysis. Faculty research strengths focus on North American, European, and Asian contexts.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum requirements to be considered for admission to the PhD in geography include 36 hours of graduate work in geography or an allied discipline acceptable scores on the GRE Exam three strong letters of recommendation and a personal statement that summarizes your background and interests in pursuing an advanced degree in geography We also encourage you to submit a writing sample ie publication research paper written for class report relevant to your professional activities that demonstrates your writing ability

Tips on Writing your Personal Statement When you write your personal statement please explain your professional goals and research interests and identify one or two faculty members or potential advisor with whom you seem to share common interests for pursuing your research and professional goals

In addition to the application materials required by the Graduate School applicants must submit a 250-500 word personal statement
