The Doctor of Philosophy in Human Development and Family Science equips students with comprehensive understanding of developmental, interpersonal, and family theories, advanced research capabilities, and specialized knowledge in a focus area selected with faculty guidance. This HDFS doctoral program prepares graduates for academic careers in Human Development and Family Science departments or similar advanced professional roles. Students will examine how individuals function within family structures and broader societal contexts, while exploring biological, psychological, and cognitive growth throughout human life.
To fully understand family dynamics, the curriculum cultivates students' understanding of evolving family systems, role dynamics, and mutual influences. We challenge students to view families beyond simple interpersonal relationships and to identify family assets that may influence adaptation during periods of transition or difficulty.
Our program aims to produce graduates qualified for careers requiring:
Expertise in biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects of human development across all life stages
Understanding of family structures and relational patterns
Effective communication skills for engaging with individuals and family units
Evaluation and enhancement of resources supporting individuals, families, and communities
Capacity to educate about developmental processes and family dynamics
Skill in integrating educational, preventive, and intervention strategies
Competence in multigenerational practice with diverse family systems.
