The Department of Languages and Culture Studies creates programs that enhance linguistic abilities while fostering cultural understanding through language, literature, and translation studies. Beyond majors, minors, and undergraduate certificates, the department provides courses in Ancient/Modern Greek, Farsi, Hebrew, Latin, Portuguese, Swahili, and other languages via the NC Language Exchange or upon request. Students pursuing foreign language education can consider these pathways: A standalone French, German, Japanese, or Spanish major following the liberal arts framework, with optional teaching certification Combined majors pairing a foreign language with another field or studying two languages simultaneously Minors in Arabic, Chinese, Classics, Francophone Studies, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish Language specializations to supplement primary majors in other fields Course sequences leading to certificate programs
