This interdisciplinary program enables students to examine the historical, political, linguistic, literary, and cultural aspects of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia - encompassing the former Soviet republics and their areas of influence from medieval times to the present. By integrating diverse academic perspectives, learners can investigate themes of political identity, social dynamics, regional characteristics, cultural variety, and both institutional and grassroots cultural expressions. Participants may opt to join the Dawisha Fellows initiative, supported by the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. In today's global landscape where cybersecurity concerns, US-Russia relations, digital currencies, cyber threats, energy markets, and business expansion in post-Soviet regions are prominent, Russian language skills significantly enhance career prospects. The Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies major combines language acquisition with the examination of political systems, historical developments, literary works, and anthropological studies across territories spanning from Europe to Asia.
Graduates with a Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies degree find opportunities with government agencies like the State Department, military and intelligence sectors, international organizations including the UN, humanitarian programs such as Peace Corps, roles serving Russian-speaking populations in America, or consulting positions. Alumni frequently pursue advanced degrees in law or specialized Russian studies programs.
