The East Asian Studies major provides students with comprehensive knowledge of East and Southeast Asia through interdisciplinary coursework spanning humanities and social sciences. The curriculum encourages participation in study abroad programs and other structured learning experiences focused on these regions. Core offerings include East Asian humanities and social science classes covering history, literature, languages, philosophy, religion, political science, and sociology, along with specialized Southeast Asian studies. STEM courses with strong regional relevance may also apply toward the degree. Beyond foundational and advanced coursework, students can customize their studies through focused tracks in disciplines like anthropology or history, or through special options including honors theses, independent research, internships, and international study.
This program explores the rich cultural traditions, historical practices, and societal influences that have defined East Asia's varied civilizations. The major broadens intellectual perspectives, develops analytical abilities, and enhances critical thinking. Foundational classes in East Asian humanities (encompassing languages, comparative literature, and art history) and social sciences (including history, anthropology, and sociology) form the program's core. Students then design personalized academic paths by selecting from numerous advanced and specialized course offerings.
