The Environment, Ecology and Energy Program provides graduate education in Ecology through M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. programs. The M.S. program involves original research culminating in a thesis, whereas the M.A. focuses on producing a comprehensive literature review. Students completing a master's degree who wish to continue for a Ph.D. must formally request approval using the Permission to Continue Beyond the Master's Degree form. Exceptional candidates may enter the Ph.D. program directly, based on the Graduate Admissions Committee's evaluation.
Our program examines Earth's systems through fundamental research and practical applications. By integrating natural and social sciences, we position North Carolina at the forefront of environmental research and sustainable solutions worldwide. We transform research into knowledge by studying complex environmental systems and their impacts on all life forms. Our mission includes training future scholars to advance environmental understanding for generations to come.
