The Sociology Department provides Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs in sociology, preparing students for academic and research careers. All enrolled students complete foundational courses covering sociological theory, research methodologies, statistical analysis, and specialized subject areas. The curriculum focuses on comprehensive education that combines theoretical frameworks, methodological skills, and applied knowledge. Faculty research and graduate studies primarily concentrate on comparative social structures and societal transformation, population studies, research techniques and statistical analysis, workforce dynamics and industrial relations, as well as social stratification and organizational systems.
The department collaborates extensively with the Carolina Population Center, Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, and the University Computation Center. Students have access to the Odum Computer Laboratory for academic and investigative purposes, with complimentary programming support, advisory services, and computational resources for research projects. Additionally, the department oversees the publication of Social Forces, a globally recognized sociological journal.
