The MA is exclusively available as part of the Dual Degree program and cannot be pursued independently. The M.A./J.D. in Gender and Women's Studies equips students to integrate feminist theories, social movements, critical race studies, and the intersections of gender, law, policy, and global systems into legal practice. Hands-on learning opportunities, including faculty-supervised internships, deepen students' engagement with feminist praxis. The program culminates in an original Master's paper, allowing students to explore specialized interests. Typically completed in four years, the MA/JD combines rigorous academic training with practical experience.
While designed as a four-year program, some students have completed the MA/JD in three and a half years by earning additional credits. The 36-unit M.A. requires 21 units of Gender and Women's Studies graduate courses and 15 units of approved law classes, with up to 15 GWS units transferable toward the J.D.
Students begin their studies in either Gender and Women's Studies or The College of Law during their first year, switching programs for the second year. The remaining two years are dedicated to fulfilling requirements for both degrees. Note that Gender and Women's Studies courses taken before law school admission do not count toward the J.D.
