Sociologists examine how societies function (or fail to function). They employ diverse research techniques to analyze human social relationships, organizational frameworks, societal changes, and the underlying reasons and effects of social conduct. Since social influences shape every facet of human existence, sociology's scope can range from worldwide economic systems to personal romantic partnerships. Sociologists also lead investigations into society's most urgent challenges, such as racial prejudice, sex-based bias, economic disparities, healthcare access, ecological decline, and religious conflicts. At OU's Sociology Department, students can explore these topics firsthand with distinguished professors specializing in these fields.
Faculty members are engaged scholars who incorporate numerous specialties into their instruction, covering topics like childhood development, schooling, ecosystems, family dynamics, sex roles, worldwide inequality, wellness, cross-border population movements, and faith traditions. Students can collaborate on faculty-led research initiatives or pursue independent studies. They may also showcase their findings at events like OU's Undergraduate Research Day and the Oklahoma Sociological Association's yearly conference.
