The History graduate program at the University of North Carolina prepares scholars for diverse professional paths: educating future university students, conducting research to interpret the past, and serving as public voices connecting history to contemporary issues. Our doctoral graduates teach at research institutions, liberal arts colleges, military academies, community colleges, and K-12 schools. They hold positions with the State Department, Defense Department, National Park Service, and numerous public and private organizations. This professional breadth mirrors the program's extensive subject offerings, methodological perspectives, and flexible degree requirements for both MA and PhD candidates.
Our department fosters collaborative research, strong faculty guidance, and a supportive academic environment. The UNC History Department benefits from exceptional library resources (with UNC and Duke's combined collections ranking among the nation's top ten) and active partnerships with Triangle-area universities. This expansive intellectual network enhances the groundbreaking scholarship and teaching of both faculty and students.
