The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) aims to advance human movement knowledge to enhance lives. Its goal is to shape society by cultivating leaders and applying research findings. The department trains professionals as researchers, instructors, and practitioners. Students can earn a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science with concentrations in athletic training, exercise physiology, or sport administration. EXSS equips students with specialized expertise while addressing current challenges in these fields and fostering a broad perspective on exercise and sports.
To fully achieve its purpose, the department provides hands-on learning opportunities. EXSS collaborates with various campus and community partners including Athletics, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, the Duke Center for Living, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Get Real and Heel, Meadowmont Wellness Center, Campus Health Services, Carolina Adventures, Campus Recreation, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, and local parks and recreation departments. Through supervised placements beyond the classroom, students gain real-world skills in their chosen disciplines. All master's candidates complete mandatory research components, with ample additional research opportunities available. The department expects graduate students to actively participate in research during their time at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Applicants admitted to the MA Program in EXSS typically have the following mean scores on objective indicators: Undergraduate GPA: 3.51; GRE-V: 156; GRE-Q: 152; GRE-Writing: 4.6.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
