The History Department at the University of North Carolina has consistently stood at the forefront of military history scholarship, embracing a comprehensive approach that examines everything from combat strategies to political decisions, domestic impacts to aerial warfare. This discipline requires careful consideration of both societal contexts and the particular circumstances of each conflict. Additionally, it frequently incorporates insights from multiple academic viewpoints. Our goal is to provide students with a thorough understanding of warfare's human dimensions across time, from antiquity to modern counterinsurgency challenges. UNC Chapel Hill's military history graduate program operates in partnership with Duke University. History graduate students follow standard degree requirements while earning their credentials from either institution. Those specializing in military history, or selecting it as an academic focus, collaborate with faculty from both universities and complete essential coursework.
