The History Department provides a Ph.D. program focused on either U.S. or European History as the main specialization. Candidates select their principal concentration from these two historical areas. The program mandates preparation in four distinct specialization areas. Within their chosen focus (U.S. or European), students will study two chronological periods. A third specialization must be selected from the department's key disciplines: International Security and Public Safety, History of Science and Technology, Agricultural and Environmental History, or Race, Gender, and Regional Studies. The fourth specialization may be either a thematic or geographical area, or a subject outside history. Non-history specializations require a minimum of 12 credit hours. For detailed options, consult the department's list of approved specializations. Applicants need an accredited bachelor's degree and must demonstrate doctoral-level academic potential, as evaluated by the Graduate Committee.
