The doctoral program at the University of Chicago is distinguished by its intellectually rigorous, cross-disciplinary, and comparative methodologies. The History Department provides an extensive selection of academic concentrations, actively promoting enrollment in courses beyond History and the inclusion of one comparative discipline among three oral examination areas. A vibrant array of interdisciplinary workshops and symposia fosters scholarly dialogue among students and professors across the university. Our renowned faculty engages directly with graduate students through seminars, colloquia, and tutorials that constitute the foundation of advanced education at Chicago. While all programs emphasize critical reading, expert source analysis, and precise writing, Chicago additionally challenges students to generate research that meaningfully expands the boundaries of their discipline.
