Italy arises from its contradictions: a single language alongside countless dialects, ancient literature and culture coexisting with vibrant local creativity in a globalized world, renowned landscapes and culinary heritage contrasted with the scars of wars, political upheavals, and ecological crises. Its essence resonates through artistic expression, historical narratives, political discourse, and philosophical thought, serving as a meeting point for Mediterranean influences, civilizations, and population movements. Embracing this intricate tapestry, the Graduate Program in Italian Studies examines Italy as a cultural crossroads where territories and imagination intersect, viewed through diverse analytical perspectives.
Our Graduate Program empowers students to explore the full range of humanities and social sciences disciplines. We foster dialogues between Italian literary, linguistic, and cultural works and related fields including anthropology, art history, comparative literature, cultural and visual studies, philosophy, critical theory, film studies, geography, history, musicology, post-colonial studies, translation studies, and gender/queer studies.
UNC-CH's Graduate Program in Italian Studies goes further still. We champion cross-disciplinary exchanges that transcend traditional humanities boundaries, cultivating the skills, adaptability, and awareness needed to interpret complex social and environmental systems. Through cutting-edge theoretical approaches, we simultaneously broaden the scope of Italian Studies while offering fresh insights into its historical roots.
