Graduate students in UNC-Chapel Hill's Geography Department enjoy a collaborative, cross-disciplinary atmosphere, engagement in our externally-funded research initiatives, and chances to contribute to teaching and departmental leadership. The program provides both MA and PhD options, with a stronger emphasis on PhD candidates who may join with or without a master's degree. Our Earth and Environment research cluster examines the biophysical environment as an interconnected whole, highlighting relationships and feedback loops among terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric components. Our work centers on how Earth's surface features - including soils, plant life, and water networks - interact with atmospheric conditions and the processes that drive energy and material flows. We view human communities, through both individual actions and institutional frameworks, as fundamental elements of the planetary system. Academic and investigative efforts concentrate on plant-climate relationships, water distribution patterns, ecosystem nutrient cycles, human-induced landscape transformations (such as land use changes), and climate fluctuations.
