The Geography Department's graduate program provides both Master's and Doctoral degree options. Its core mission is to educate scholars and professionals who will generate and share knowledge while excelling in both public and private fields. Currently, about 80-90 students are enrolled in the graduate program. While the Master's program launched in 1930, the Ph.D. program started later in 1965, with the first doctorate awarded in 1968. Recognized as a leading program nationwide among geography departments offering doctorates, it also serves around 3,500 undergraduate students annually through its courses and maintains roughly 200 undergraduate majors.
At its heart, the graduate program aims to develop experts who will create and spread knowledge while making significant impacts across various professional sectors.
With department approval, students with a University of Colorado master's degree in geography may apply all credit hours from 5000-level courses or above (except thesis credits) to the PhD requirements.
All international applicants are required to meet a minimum standard of English proficiency.
