UNC's Ph.D. program emphasizes inquiry-driven learning, allowing students to craft individualized study plans centered on their research focus. This degree demands that students develop a structured academic path guided by a central research question or challenge. While grounding students in core Communication Studies areas, the program actively promotes cross-disciplinary exploration connected to the primary research focus. This central question and its related inquiries shape course selection, inform comprehensive exam preparation, and guide the creation of an original dissertation project. Both bachelor's and master's degree holders enter directly into the doctoral program, as the Department doesn't provide a standalone M.A. degree option.
Students can have either baccalaureate degree or a master’s degree.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
