Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics within UNC Chapel Hill's School of Medicine. Our core purpose as an academic department is education. PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers train across over 40 laboratories conducting pioneering biomedical studies. This research training occurs during an era of remarkable scientific transformation, where novel techniques are exposing disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identifying potential drug targets, and enabling groundbreaking therapeutic approaches. Graduates with a Biochemistry & Biophysics PhD will possess the expertise to tackle today's most challenging health issues.
Our curriculum balances fundamental training with adaptability, enabling students to specialize in various research fields. Biochemistry track students enroll in BIOC 701 - Research Topics in Biochemistry, which connects to our external Seminar series. Similarly, Biophysics track students take BIOC 704 - Seminars in Biophysics, attending biophysics talks as course requirements. Both seminar courses enhance students' preparation for external speaker presentations and improve their own research presentation skills through discussion of upcoming speakers' publications. Additionally, the mandatory Biochemistry 712 course focuses on grant writing techniques, particularly for qualifying exam preparation.
To be considered for admission to the graduate program in Biochemistry & Biophysics, students must apply to the Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP). Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree at the time of enrollment to UNC. The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
