The Tom and Anne Smith MD-PhD Program provides an integrated educational pathway for aspiring physician-scientists, equipping them with the skills needed for careers in academic medicine. This seven-to-eight year dual-degree program merges four years of medical education with three to four years of doctoral research training in scientific fields.
Graduates emerge as uniquely qualified physician-scientists capable of leading innovative research initiatives and mentoring future generations in translational research. Their combined expertise enables them to deliver cutting-edge patient care by integrating scientific discoveries into clinical practice.
The program offers adaptable training pathways for medical researchers. The standard curriculum structure includes:
Years 1-2: Medical school foundational curriculum with patient-focused learning
Years 3-5: Doctoral-level coursework and research
Years 6-8: Clinical rotations and dissertation completion
The University of Missouri's Biochemistry program operates jointly under the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the School of Medicine. Ranked among the top 10 public medical school biochemistry departments nationally, we provide exceptional training with approximately 39 core faculty members and 10 additional faculty available for student mentorship.
