The Bachelor of Arts in Music provides a highly adaptable program that allows students to combine their studies with other disciplines. Those enrolled in this degree frequently pair it with majors like biology, chemistry, history, economics, pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, global studies, psychology, and numerous others. Requiring fewer courses than the Bachelor of Music, this option is ideal for students who want to explore music at the university level alongside another academic focus. UNC boasts a rich legacy of exceptional jazz performance. The jazz program features performance groups such as the UNC Jazz Band, UNC jazz combos, Charanga Carolina, and faculty-led jazz ensembles. Students can take classes in jazz theory/harmony, improvisation, history, and arranging. The Jazz Band and combos present on-campus concerts twice per semester, often showcasing guest artists who spend multiple days engaging with the campus community. Recent visiting clinicians have included notable figures like Andre Hayward, Sara Caswell, Alphonso Horne, Patrick Bartley, Jr., Carl Allen, the Marcus Roberts Trio, Wycliffe Gordon, Jamey Aebersold, Etienne Charles, Rodney Whitaker, Walter Smith III, Mark Whitfield, and many more. Additionally, the combos regularly perform at various locations on campus and throughout Chapel Hill.
