The Sociology Department must adhere to the Graduate Studies guidelines outlined in the UNM Catalog. It's essential for students to review the UNM Catalog thoroughly. While students can maintain the catalog requirements from their enrollment year, they have the option to adopt updated versions if preferred.

Our department provides a Ph.D. program that includes earning an MA degree along the way, without offering a standalone terminal MA degree. All graduate students are accepted directly into the Ph.D. track. Applicants without a completed MA degree and thesis will fulfill those requirements during their Ph.D. studies. Though students may exit the program after obtaining their MA (or at any stage), all enrollees begin with the goal of ultimately achieving their Ph.D.
