The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides graduate programs leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) in Mathematics and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematics, with specializations available in either Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
The M.S. in Mathematics can be completed through two options: Plan I requires 26 course hours plus a 6-hour thesis, while Plan II involves 32 course hours. Plan II students must pass the M.S./Ph.D. Qualifying Exam at the master's level instead of submitting a thesis. Admission to the Ph.D. program requires passing this same examination at an advanced level, meaning the Ph.D. qualifying exam standards match those for M.S. Plan II. Following successful completion of the Qualifying Exam, Ph.D. candidates must complete an additional 18 course hours, pass the Doctoral Comprehensive Exam, meet language proficiency requirements, earn at least 18 dissertation credits, and ultimately prepare, submit, and defend their dissertation.
General degree requirements for both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs are outlined in the UNM Catalog. Detailed academic expectations, required documentation, and important deadlines are thoroughly explained in the Mathematics Graduate Handbook.
