The PhD in Counselor Education Program aims to help qualified master's-level counselors expand their professional prospects. This program focuses on building essential skills for careers in academic and professional service environments. Through coursework and research, graduates gain qualifications for faculty roles in graduate counselor education programs, as well as positions as educators, researchers, supervisors, and consultants in government, education, and community or school settings. The program holds accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
Typically, PhD candidates enter with a master's degree in counseling, practical counseling experience, and professional licensure. The doctoral curriculum enhances expertise in research, counseling theory, teaching, supervision, consultation, leadership, advocacy, and diversity studies beyond master's-level expectations. Students refine their professional counseling philosophy, gain experience in supervision and teaching, and explore social-ecological influences on mental health. This program trains counselor educators—it is not a psychology degree and does not lead to psychologist licensure.
