The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) represents the most advanced academic degree awarded for mastering professional counseling practice through rigorous study. This program equips students with coursework and hands-on training to excel as counselor educators, practitioners, and researchers. The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Counseling specifically trains graduates for roles in academic settings, university counseling centers, and other professional environments, with a strong focus on developing expertise in teaching, supervision, and scholarly research within counseling programs.
At Idaho State University, students pursuing counselor education will:
Develop expertise in teaching counseling techniques and theoretical foundations.
Gain supervision skills for both individual and group settings across all counseling specializations (including Clinical Mental Health, Rehabilitation, Marriage/Family Therapy, Student Affairs, and School Counseling). Acquire the ability to instruct courses within CACREP's core curriculum and specialized areas. Learn to assess counselor training programs and clinical sites. Understand current professional challenges and ethical considerations in counselor education. Gain hands-on experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Develop professional writing skills for academic publications. Mentor and advise master's-level counseling students. Master advanced clinical counseling techniques.
