The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Planning and Design (BAEPD) equips students with the knowledge, tools, and skills to promote social and environmental justice. As communities confront complex challenges, they seek actionable solutions. The core challenge lies in collectively imagining and building sustainable futures. The BAEPD program highlights innovative approaches to address and adapt to the rapid transformations happening in global communities.
The BAEPD curriculum centers on social initiatives rooted in community-driven insights and values, combined with an understanding of built and natural environments. This approach aims to foster thriving communities, dynamic economies, and resilient spaces. For millennia, inhabitants of the American Southwest have adapted to arid climates. Examining diverse cultural viewpoints and intricate social histories is essential for present and future resilience, with lessons applicable both within and beyond this region.
The BAEPD bridges theory and practice through courses featuring discussion seminars, fieldwork in natural and community settings, and hands-on learning. Students learn to think across scales, examining how global trends manifest locally and how local efforts can drive worldwide change. The program incorporates global comparative frameworks, connecting different regions to draw wisdom from varied experiences and advance social transformation and placemaking.
BAEPD alumni pursue careers in tribal, local, state, regional, national, and international public sectors, community organizations, NGOs (both U.S. and international), community development foundations, and planning and design firms.
