After finishing this program, graduates are eligible to seek New Mexico teaching licensure for visual arts in grades K-12. The curriculum has been verified to fulfill New Mexico's state requirements for licensure or certification. However, the program hasn't confirmed whether its curriculum satisfies licensure requirements in other states. Some states maintain reciprocity agreements with New Mexico regarding teaching licenses. For details and planning purposes, prospective students should consult the education departments of other states.
Students seeking admission to the art teacher preparation program must satisfy the screening standards and processes established by both the College of Education and Art Education. Screening occurs during the prerequisite course Art Education 310, and occasionally during Art Education 320.
Once accepted into the art teacher preparation program, students receive a faculty advisor they must consult regularly. Together, they'll develop an approved study plan, which should be created as soon as possible after program admission. Students are obligated to meet with their advisor every semester throughout their enrollment.
