Our Ph.D. program in marine biology empowers you to progress professionally while exploring and safeguarding marine and coastal ecosystems along with their diverse inhabitants. Our faculty employ marine species as models for studying molecular evolution, cellular processes, and nervous system functions, while also investigating marine ecosystem dynamics. You can pursue fundamental scientific inquiry or applied fields like fish farming and fishery management. Alumni from our program direct marine resource agencies, educate others about marine science, operate aquaculture businesses, and conduct vital research.
The Marine Biology (MB) specialization caters to students passionate about studying marine, coastal, and estuarine environments and their organisms across all scientific levels. Some UNH researchers utilize marine life to examine genetic relationships, metabolic functions, and neural mechanisms, while others analyze marine ecosystem organization and processes. Faculty members engage in pure scientific investigation, practical applications like seafood production, or blend both approaches. Our graduates manage marine conservation organizations, instruct marine science courses, run aquaculture ventures, or pursue research careers. UNH provides exceptional resources including the Coastal Marine Lab, Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, research boats, and a top-tier SCUBA certification program for research diving. This specialization connects with UNH's School of Marine Sciences and Ocean Engineering.
International applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as a precondition for applying to any of our graduate programs. In some cases, you may also need a master’s degree or its equivalent.
