The South Texas coastal region, particularly near Beaumont, features soil conditions and plentiful water resources perfect for cultivating rice. Situated in far southeastern Texas, the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center at Beaumont lies just 30 miles from the Gulf Coast to the south and 30 miles from the Louisiana border to the east. This facility offers instructional resources for rice farming along with complementary crops grown alongside rice. As part of the Texas A&M University System, the Center includes researchers from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Texas Cooperative Extension, Texas A&M University, and the USDA Agricultural Research Service.
Annually, Texas's rice sector injects close to $1 billion into the state's economy. Approximately $500 million comes directly from rice crop values, while the remaining half stems from nature-based tourism like birdwatching and hunting. Texas's rice-growing region sits along the crucial Central Flyway migration route, making local rice farmers essential stewards of winter habitats for migratory birds escaping colder northern climates.
