The University of Nevada, Reno's counseling program aims to train skilled, ethically grounded counselors with cultural competence, preparing them to deliver outstanding services across diverse communities in both public and private sectors.
The school counseling specialization is a 67-credit CACREP-accredited program centered on developmental approaches to school counseling. Students in this track complete core counseling coursework along with specialized classes covering school counseling fundamentals, program development, and consultation techniques. This specialization equips future counselors with essential self-awareness, knowledge, and practical abilities to implement comprehensive counseling services. Graduates meet Nevada's requirements for school counselor licensure.
Throughout their academic journey, students will cultivate the professional qualities, attitudes, and behaviors that define exceptional counseling practitioners.
Students will develop the ability to incorporate ethical principles and legal standards into their daily counseling practice, demonstrating thorough understanding of professional ethics.
Aligned with ACA multicultural standards, students will gain cultural awareness, theoretical knowledge, and practical skills to become effective, culturally responsive professionals in clinical, marriage/family, and educational settings.
Students will acquire expertise in human development across the lifespan and learn to apply developmental theories in professional practice.
