The Gender, Race, and Identity program explores how race, gender, sexuality, class, and other identity markers intersect within societal power structures. This interdisciplinary major investigates identity, difference, and power through historical and modern lenses, examining both global and local contexts. Our curriculum emphasizes critical examination of race, gender, sexuality, and class, while also addressing Indigeneity, ethnicity, nationality, religion, ability status, and other social classifications. The program fosters an interdisciplinary learning environment that bridges social sciences and humanities, equipping students with analytical skills to understand and transform their communities and careers.
Learning outcomes include:
explaining concepts of identity, difference, and power as they relate to race, gender, sexuality, and class, while also considering additional factors like Indigeneity, ethnicity, citizenship, religion, ability status, and more.
evaluating different historical and theoretical perspectives on identity, difference, and power concerning systemic inequality, activism, and governmental authority.
synthesizing course material through various communication formats including oral presentations and different writing styles tailored to specific audiences.
examining identity, difference, and power through multiple disciplinary approaches using diverse research methodologies.
applying academic knowledge from Gender, Race, and Identity studies to personal and career aspirations, while developing theoretically grounded social, cultural, or community initiatives.
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school. You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Verification of having met the English requirement through one of the following options: TOEFL score 61+; IELTS (must be academic version) with a score of 6.0+; Duolingo English Exam score 95+; Cambridge score of B2+.
