This specialization allows students to concentrate on one or multiple regions of interest, such as Latin America, Europe, or the Middle East. Consult with an academic advisor about potential focus areas like Africa, Central Asia-South Asia (CASA), or East Asia, subject to course availability. Alongside the INST core curriculum, students must complete at least 15 credit hours of upper-level coursework (3000-4000 level) related to their chosen region. Minimum requirements include three years of university-level foreign language study (a minor is recommended) or two years each of two foreign languages, with at least one language connected to the selected region. Study abroad programs in your focus area are highly encouraged. Available courses for Area Studies vary by region and semester offerings.
The International Studies (INST) Major at UNO is an interdisciplinary degree that prepares students for global careers in business, government, and nonprofit sectors, as well as graduate programs. Potential paths include international business, diplomacy, national security, law, conflict resolution, humanitarian work, development, education, and public service. The INST faculty strongly recommends combining language studies with cultural immersion. Many students pursue dual majors or language minors alongside their International Studies degree.
