The Department of Middle East Studies (MES) explores the rich histories, faiths, languages, and literary traditions spanning from the Nile to the Oxus Rivers and from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. Our faculty guide Middle East Studies majors through an interdisciplinary examination of civilizations, tracing their development from early urban centers and written language in Sumer and Ancient Egypt through the emergence of major world religions to contemporary Middle Eastern societies and their global diaspora. The curriculum offers insights into the cultural, linguistic, artistic, and political forces that have influenced Middle Eastern civilizations throughout history. Students can tailor their program to pair with another major or support particular career goals. Those considering a Middle East Studies major are encouraged to consult with an advisor to develop a well-structured academic plan.
