The Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies provides advanced degree programs culminating in M.S. and Ph.D. qualifications. As a charter member of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA), the department delivers multiple online graduate programs via the Great Plains IDEA university network. Learners can utilize both the Family Resource Center (FRC) and Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory (CDL). Marriage and Family Therapy students provide counseling services at the FRC, offering in-person and remote telemental health sessions to Nebraska's rural populations. The FRC additionally functions as a research facility, enabling students to conduct studies involving couples, families, individuals, and therapeutic approaches. Child development and early childhood education students acquire hands-on teaching experience at the CDL while working with children and families. This facility also serves as a research hub, allowing students to investigate child development and educational curricula. The CDL maintains accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), placing it among the top 9% of such programs nationally, with continuous operation since 1925.
