Graduates from the Early Childhood MEd program gain comprehensive understanding of typical and atypical child development across key areas (language acquisition, cognitive skills, learning approaches, social-emotional growth, and physical/motor development), along with expertise in assessment techniques, curriculum design, ethical practices, and professional standards. They develop the ability to adapt learning environments, instructional materials, and personalized family development strategies to promote inclusive participation for all children and families in educational programs.
Located within an urban public university, UMass Boston's Early Childhood Master's Program focuses on preparing educators to work effectively with diverse populations in both school and early childhood contexts.

The Early Childhood (ECHD) program provides two distinct Master's options: Initial Licensure for Pre-K through Grade 2 and Non-Licensure/Community Professional pathways.
The Initial Licensure track is a 37-credit curriculum featuring 13 mandatory courses culminating in public school certification. This sequence includes a 1-credit pre-practicum and a 6-credit full-time practicum. Students typically enroll in 2-3 courses per term, completing their pre-practicum in the second-to-last semester and their practicum during the final semester. Completion time ranges between 2-3 years based on course load.
The Non-Licensure/Community Professional option is a 36-credit program designed for careers in various early childhood environments as educators, policy specialists, non-profit professionals, or administrators. This pathway includes 12 courses combining foundational studies with electives, with completion typically taking 2-3 years depending on enrollment intensity.
