The Civil Engineering Department provides graduate programs at both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and University of Nebraska at Omaha, which are about 50 miles apart. Students have access to specialized facilities such as materials and geotechnical laboratories, environmental and transportation labs, and Lincoln Airport's renowned vehicle crash testing center. The structures lab supports full-scale testing of bridges and buildings under gravity loads, seismic activity, and wind forces. Research opportunities align with faculty and student interests, spanning areas like advanced concrete technologies (ultra high-performance, self-consolidating, and high-strength varieties), composite material applications, climate change hydrology, water resource management, environmental remediation, transportation safety innovations, structural reliability studies, and cutting-edge pavement and geotechnical research using modern analytical methods.

GRE Exception: Students who have taken coursework from the University of Nebraska College of Engineering are not required to submit GRE scores. Applicants to the Office of Graduate Studies whose native language is not English are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of at least 6.5
