Doctoral programs combine specialized coursework with independent research, leading to a dissertation (requiring at least 60 course credits plus 12 dissertation credits). Students work closely with faculty advisors to create personalized degree plans. Recent dissertation topics have spanned civil engineering disciplines including structural design, engineering mechanics, geotechnical studies, geoenvironmental systems, transportation infrastructure, water resource management, wind engineering applications, and environmental solutions.
Applicants holding graduate degrees in non-engineering fields may be admitted conditionally upon completing foundational civil engineering coursework. Those with master's degrees in civil or environmental engineering lacking equivalent core course requirements must complete these foundational courses promptly. Doctoral candidates develop customized study plans with faculty guidance, primarily selecting CE or ENVE prefix courses, though programs frequently incorporate relevant coursework from other departments beyond Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering and the Whitacre College of Engineering.
