BMED's Medicinal Chemistry research specializes in creating, synthesizing, and advancing bioactive compounds and pharmaceutical solutions for various biomedical applications. This includes developing diagnostic tools, treatments, and imaging technologies targeting conditions like CNS disorders and cancer.
Originally rooted in pharmacy and drug discovery, Medicinal Chemistry now encompasses broader aspects of small molecule innovation, such as biomarker development, fluorescent probes, computational modeling, high-throughput screening, diagnostics, and imaging technologies. BMED researchers bring specialized knowledge in synthetic and analytical chemistry, molecular modeling, and structure-activity relationships. Ongoing initiatives focus on designing small molecules related to the cholinergic system, neurotransmitter pathways, cannabinoids, drug metabolism enzymes, DNA-interacting compounds, and prodrug activation. Beyond independent research, Medicinal Chemistry faculty actively collaborate within and outside the institution, supplying essential materials to support physiological, biochemical, and pharmacological studies across BMED.
